Who doesn't love Pixar films? Ever since Toy Story, I've been completely hooked by the ground breaking animation and clever storytelling of these instant classic films
Coming from a family of big Pixar fans, we were absolutely thrilled to find out that the Science Behind Pixar Exhibit was coming to our neck of the woods. We decided to celebrate the first official day of summer vacation by heading to the Franklin Institute to check it out.
The exhibit starts with a quick 10 minute movie detailing the steps a Pixar movie needs to go through from start to finish. At the completion of movie, you are admitted into the exhibit to get a a closer, hands on look at these steps . There are computer programs to manipulate the look of certain scenes in a number of Pixar movies. There are short videos where Pixar artists go into depth about the particular job they do. Also, there are some great photo opportunities with a variety of life sized character models available.
At the end of the exhibit, we all had a better appreciation what it takes to create a computer animated film. Everything needs to be considered from texture, movement of hair and clothing, lighting, reflective surfaces and camera angles. Some of these elements are programmed down to the individual pixel. A staggering the amount of detail goes into creating one of these movies. I had assumed that computer animated films meant that computers did the animation. I now realize the computer is just a tool used by these amazing artists. I'll never look at computer animation quite the same way again.
The Science Behind Pixar exhibit will be at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia until September 5, 2016. Timed entry tickets can be purchased online.
